Law Student Congress

Law Student Congress

The National LGBT Bar’s Law Student Congress is the only national LGBT law student organization in the nation. It is involved in organizing the National LGBT Bar Association’s Annual Conference & Career Fair (Lavender Law®) and administering the annual Michael Greenberg Writing Competition and Student Leadership Award. The Law Student Congress promotes regional and national interaction between LGBT law students and lawyers and helps LGBT students build contacts within the profession. It also engages in activism of concern to law students.

 

Administration

The Division is divided into 12 Regions, each headed by a Regional Chair. The Division is run on a monthly basis by a Steering Committee, consisting of 2 National Chairs, 2 Regional Chairs, and 3 At-Large Directors of the Board of the National LGBT Bar Association. General policy is set by the Law Student Congress which consists of the Steering Committee and the remaining Regional Chairs.

The Law Student Congress meets several times a year, including at least one in-person meeting at the annual LGBT Bar Lavender Law Conference in the summer and at least two additional phone meetings over the course of the year. Regional Chairs are expected to attend these meetings; all other student members of the National LGBT Bar Association are members of the Law Student Congress and may participate in these meetings.

The Law Student Congress participated in a national effort to end “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” and submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court arguing for the University of California Hastings Law School’s ability to deny recognition to student groups that discriminate against LGBT students.
