This workshop is designed for people who regularly try cases to juries and are perceived by jurors as visibly trans or queer who try cases along with a lawyer who is visibly trans or queer. We will work together to come up with some questions for panel voir dire and then to practice in small groups doing jury selection. We will also touch on issues raised by doing jury selection when we have a trans or queer client. We will identify the kinds of questions to ask to directly address the SOGI of the attorney on a case and deselect jurors who cannot hear our cases fairly and then will practice asking those questions. Ideally, we would like two workshop blocks: the first would be mostly filled by lecture and the second we could do in small groups. The first would be a prerequisite for the second. If you couldn’t accommodate this, we could try to figure out how to do this vision in only one block.
Speakers: Connor Barusch (Committee for Public Counsel Services); Deborah Lolai (Bronx Defenders); Nana Yankah (CPCS)
