Séhzad Sooklall

Séhzad is currently a 2L at Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. He currently serves as treasurer for OUTlaw, Cardozo’s LGBTQ student organization. This past summer, Séhzad had the tremendous honor and privilege to pursue an externship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans in the Chambers of Judge James L. Dennis. He is extremely grateful for that opportunity and thinks he has learned so much via his interaction with the law clerks and the judge.  He graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and a minor in International Relations. He also completed a Master of Public Administration at LSU last year, where he concentrated on sexual minority rights in government – his project for his colloquium class was on the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, and his final research paper was on international perspectives pertaining to sexual minority rights in different parts of the world. Prior to law school, Séhzad was at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he worked with different Section Chiefs to ensure that the internal medicine fellowship programs meet accreditation requirements. In Baton Rouge, after his undergraduate degree, Séhzad worked at different nonprofits, including the Advance Baton Rouge Charter School Association and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. During his master’s program, Séhzad also undertook a public administration internship at the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, where he designed and produced an AmeriCorps Member Development program. Originally from Paris, France, Séhzad became a naturalized U.S. citizen in April this year. He intends to live life to the fullest in his new homeland and is excited to pursue the different educational and legal opportunities available here. Séhzad is extremely passionate to give back to his new country, which he thinks has already given him so much. He wants to serve the broader community and has a keen interest in public service. During his time in New Orleans, he served on the Board of Directors of Encore Academy, a new charter school that has a special focus on the performing arts. Séhzad is thrilled to be in a city that has so much to offer. He enjoys going to the New York City Ballet, the New York Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Opera – basically everything at the Lincoln Center. He also enjoys walking the streets of New York, especially around Central Park and Greenwich Village. But above all, Séhzad loves to spend time with his family, who lives in Paris, and with his friends, who are now all over the United States, from Los Angeles to Louisiana.   Contact the Northeastern Region Chair
